Welcome to the 178th week of Julian Assange Sydney Town Hall gatherings.
The journalism of Julian Assange successfully brought a degree of transparency to non-transparent power, by shedding light on war crimes, torture programs and rampant corruption. The response of non-transparent power, to Julian’s award-winning journalism, has been to demonise and persecute him. If we wish to move towards greater levels of democratic oversight, we cannot allow ourselves to sit back and ignore this injustice. We need to realise that this injustice is not limited to the mistreatment of Julian, it affects each and every one of us. If governments are able to operate without transparency, democracy becomes a meaningless concept.
Transparency is necessary for true democracy because we need to hold governments to account for what they really get up to. A lack of transparency enables corruption and tyranny. If we are ever going to resist tyranny, we must aim for transparent democracy. We cannot allow the genuine free press, which Julian brought into existence, to be forcibly deactivated by corrupt power!
Transparent democracy is advantageous to everyone. It requires there is a genuine free press and a public overwhelmingly supportive of a genuine free press. We don’t need to be in lockstep with a particular ideology, for there to be unity in support of transparent democracy.
Unity will inevitably involve infinitely diverse individuals coming together for something fundamentally beneficial to everyone. The freedom of Julian Assange is beneficial to all of us. It will involve our unity to bring it about!
This unity is necessary to make sure that we maintain our own freedom, which is increasingly being denied to us by governments that work in lockstep with the non-transparent power of large corporations and their instruments of propagandist media. We need to demonstrate our unity for transparent democracy to make it possible! All people benefit from knowing the truth! Those who inform the public with the truth before the truth becomes generally accepted are the true heroes of society. Julian Assange brought us the knowledge that our governments and corporate power are subverting democracy by systematically hiding important information from us. Corrupt governments persecute publishers of truth to make it possible for a few exceptionally powerful individuals to take advantage of everyone who doesn’t know the truth. Censorship and persecution of publishers and journalists bring tyranny! Transparency brings freedom!
We need to unite to free Julian Assange because Julian’s freedom is ultimately everyone’s freedom!
