Speech by Karyn 4th June 2021

Julian Assange was arrested on the 11th of April 2019 for jumping bail. It needs to be understood that Julian did want to cooperate with Swedish police. However, they made this deliberately impossible for him to do so whist the UK goaded them on. Julian was terrified that if arrested he would face extradition to the United States under SAMS conditions. These fears were well founded.

Since being arrested, Julian Assange has been treated as a dangerous criminal One would think that he is a violent man, capable of heinous crimes. Nothing could be further from the truth.
He is a decent man who wanted to protect whistle-blowers and provide a safe platform for them to disclose corruption and crimes of government and large business. He has been described by those that know him well as a gentle intellectual and not someone who should be locked up for 23.5 hours a day away from his friends and family.

Julian has said that the best way to achieve justice is to expose injustice and if wars can be started by lies, they can be stopped by truth. Does this sound like the words of a villain? The words of a man who wants to do others harm.
Or does this seem more like a man who would do what he can to stand up for fellow men and women. He has also said “capable, generous men do not create victims, they nurture them.”
This sums up the type of man Julian Assange is.

The UN Special Rapporteur, Nils Melzer, has stated that While the US Government prosecutes Mr. Assange for publishing information about serious human rights violations, including torture and murder, the officials responsible for these crimes continue to enjoy impunity,”
“Despite the complexity of the proceedings against him led by the world’s most powerful Government, Mr. Assange’s access to legal counsel and documents has been severely obstructed, thus effectively undermining his most fundamental right to prepare his defense,”

Melzer said:
“In my view, this case has never been about Mr. Assange’s guilt or innocence, but about making him pay the price for exposing serious governmental misconduct, including alleged war crimes and corruption. Unless the UK urgently changes course and alleviates his inhumane situation, Mr. Assange’s continued exposure to arbitrariness and abuse may soon end up costing his life.”

As good, capable people, we now need to urgently call for the immediate release of Julian Assange.

The arrest of Julian was started by Trump and should be ended by Biden. If Joe Biden, Scott Morrison, Anthony Albanese and Boris Johnstone do not lift a finger to assist Julian, what does that say about them? What does it say about democracy?
Call your politicians and demand the release of Julian. Sign the Phillip Adams petition and demand the release of Julian.
